IT ISN’T WHAT THEY CALL YOU, IT’S WHAT YOU ANSWER TO

Its Monday again, hope all had a wonderful weekend. Since some areas have started to open up, Dan and I are still hunkering down. It seems like yesterday, but its been 62 days now that we have not stepped into a store or been in contact with others other than on zoom.

A couple of weeks ago, I was inspired to write this piece, we all start the morning with the blessing of breathing for another day. Our divine power created us to be unique and we all have different talents, so what is the power of a name? Let us consider what a name is. It is the grouping of several letters of an alphabet, or other symbols, which represent the identification of a person or an object.
The one thing which separates human beings from the animal kingdom is the human mind, which has the ability to reason on a conscious level. To think consciously, one must use language. This point is not generally appreciated but it is vitally important. It is impossible to think without language. What allows language to serve in this manner? In the case of languages which have alphabets, letters are placed in a definite sequence in the alphabet, i.e., in the English alphabet, "A" is always in the first position, "B" in the second position, and so on. Any alphabet is an alphabet because symbols are recognized by their form or sound in a definite order--change the order and confusion results.
Very often the first piece of information we have about a person is their name. It’s often the first thing you learn about someone and we form judgments about people very rapidly.
Those judgments accumulate, so the first piece of information is especially important. It can lean you in a positive direction or a negative direction. And those first impressions can set the stage for future interactions. Just remember your name is just a title it doesn’t define you!!
There is this quote that I find, that explains the power of a name. The greatest word in all languages is understanding. Learn to think about life: the part we are intended to play in the scheme of things. Learn to value the principle of relationship; i.e., we are all One Life, One Breath, and One God. Therefore, there is good and God in all things. Look always for the good and you will find it along with wisdom. –ALFRED J. PARKER

For 62 years I have been called Sheryl Ann, my mom had a reason why she chose that name for me. There was this write up in the St. Petersburg Times, many years ago that told the story. My mom used to watch this TV show and there was this tug boat called the Sheryl Ann. She fell in love with that name, so her 2nd child (me) was named that.
That doesn’t define me, I’m not at all like that tug boat. Dan was told he was named after his Uncle, however, when Dan met him several years ago his story was different. His Uncle came over from Russia in the 1900’s with Dan’s father and had a friend’s name the same as his. So, he changed his name to Dan. Although, your name can influence the assumptions that other people make about your character and background, and thus the chances you are given in life," says Richard Wiseman -- a case in point, he's a professor of psychology at the University of Hertfordshire.
"It can also be a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy. If your name sounds intelligent, successful and attractive, you are more likely to act those things. A flurry of studies in recent years have examined names as predictors of success.
They found that girls with perceived "feminine" names like Isabella or Kayla are less likely to pursue math or science. Those named Taylor or Madison, and that pupils with perceived "lower status" names got worse grades than others from the same background but with posher names.
"Names can really make a difference in children's lives," Northwestern University researcher David Figlio, who has written several papers on the topic, told AFP.

As Dan and I sit and conjure our thoughts, a question comes to mind. If you could have your cake and eat it too--would you? There are two sides to every coin, as there are to every story. But I can say our journey shared over shows an experience many of us share. There are dark moments and moments of inspiration. There is love, along with sheer terror. Tears stain our past, showing the reviving energy of great joy. Hope and education are what I am trying to provide. In the end, what is life without them? This writing is for finding inspiration when it is lost.
Dan and I are neither a doctor, nor have the experience of one, but we are both survivors of cancer who feared for our lives. This is not about what is right or wrong; it is about educating ourselves to make choices, along with the awesome power of knowledge. Everyone should be given a choice, and it should be up to each of us to educate ourselves. With the internet, today, it's easy to research and discover alternative therapies and methodologies for treating and winning the battle against this disease. So first, we must believe that these solutions are possible. This is Dan and my personal story we choose to share with you so that you may become aware of another path to wellness of the body, mind, and spirit (FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE).
